Character Information

Name: "Dokugakuji" (Nicknames include "Doku" and "Dokugaku"), originally "Jien Sha" (Western Order)
Canon: Manga - Saiyuki (Gensomaden Saiyuki/Saiyuki Reload/Saiyuki Reload Gunlock) by Minekura Kazuya
Canon Point: "Blast Kouten Ch. 6.2" (what even is this numbering system anymore) aka the most current chapter, after being attacked by Nataku.
Age: 32
History: Linked Here with warnings for Suicide, Child Abuse, Incest, and Matricide.
Personality: Doku forms bonds with other men in terms of brotherhood, and women in a protective role to a sometime patronizing level. He sees in Kougaiji a spark of his own lost little brother and acts towards Kou the way an older brother would, which Kou doesn't have, but he also jokes and bonds with Kougaiji over their shared Big Brother attitudes towards Lirin. Dokugakuji in particular appreciates that Kou sees her as his little sister regardless of them only sharing a father, the same as Dokugakuji and Gojyo. However, he also doesn't tell Kougaiji this right away either, not until Lirin runs away.

He claims that he didn't join Kougaiji because of seeing Gojyo in him, just that that was his first impression of him. However, that belief is tested later on; Dokugakuji's guilt did play some part in it originally, he eventually confesses to Yaone. Later on though, that's no longer the sole reason; if it was and he gave into the guilt, he would have had to end up on Gojyo's side eventually when Doku and Yaone are confronted with Kougaiji rampaging while brainwashed. By that time though, Doku had had enough time to examine what he'd originally told Kou when Lirin went missing: "You were my conscious decision." He respected the way Kougaiji lead his people, and how he took people in at their word without considering their pasts, only their skills. That renews his decision to stay by Kou's side because of who Kou is, and he's very different from Gojyo personality-wise, not because of something as shallow as hair color and Kou pushing himself to be tough just like Gojyo did. He doesn't absolve himself completely of his guilt from Sha Jien's actions, but it does open the divide between his past self and his stronger identity as Dokugakuji.

Dokugakuji doesn't like the way Gyokumen Koushu operates at all, calling her alternate foul names like bitch or witch. He prefers a clear line of communication along the chain of command and more direct missions than vague "go do this because I said so" work. On the other hand, he appreciates Kougaiji looking at the bigger picture that if he didn't do as Gyokumen Koushu said, more of their men would be sent to die at the hands of the Sanzo Party. This means Dokugakuji, while honorable, is still working on the kinds of planning skills that would make him the top of a command chain and better serves as a support to someone else.

When he's upset, Doku is quick to blame his own failings, then let those feelings out in an angry rage. He doesn't hurt people like his Mom did, but he doesn't hesitate in punching walls or columns, even if it makes his own fist bleed. He is incredibly hard on himself and holds himself to high standards of success, not morality. He hesitates only slightly when committing to attacking an unarmed opponent from the back, stating that it's his lot as a Brute to continue acting this way if it's what he has to do to succeed in his mission.

As much as Sha Jien was formatively shaped by the killing of his mother, so too was Dokugakuji shaped by his commitment to being a swordsman in service to other youkai. There will be some very slight lingering racism as he tries to interact with former humans on an equal level (as fellow Gods) since has hasn't had to in years, and he will become uneasy with "nothing" to do - nothing he's been ordered directly to do. He will have to learn some initiative and take on Prayers for his own sake and that of his shinki, his new foster family.

Abilities:
  • Youkai Speed: it's not his key trait, call it 3x human
  • Youkai Agility: can run/jump 3x human as well
  • Youkai Strength: like at least 5x human, could increase with more effort/training
  • Youkai Endurance: at least 10x human, this is his key trait
  • Youkai Weapon: a long broadsword he can wield one-handed but often doesn't. Can be summoned out of hammerspace. If his god is Kshitigarbha, I'd love for this to be a Khakkhara monk staff instead that lights up even in magical darkness.

Strengths: Loyal. Protective. Decisive. Forgiving (of others). Charismatic (of commanding troops).
Weaknesses: Subordinate. Temper. Restless. Slight Machismo/Patriarchal. Excessive Sheltering (of those he sees as children).

God/Shinki: God
Why?: Because Gojyo needs a break. Honestly it's because he'd resigned himself to proudly supporting Kougaiji, being a follower by nature. I'd like him to stretch and try to be his own kind of Leader. I also expect him to be less anxious to return home this way, feeling like he served Kougaiji well and there's no way for him to go back since he's dead - or at least he's pretty sure he is, and the fandom is pretty sure he is too. In that respect, he'll have a bond with his shinki.

Top 3 Choices: Kshitigarbha, Caireen ("A protective mother goddess and patron of children."), or Budai.
God Type: Protector, Guardian, Adoptive Father/Big Brother, Family bonds beyond blood type of guy. (See: always treating his half-brother like his brother, no extra qualifiers needed.) Doku is one of those people who learned by contrasted example, knowing now that he wants to be everything his parents weren't. Whether he ends up as a Family God or not, Dokugakuji will consider his shinki his responsibility to care for as lost souls, giving them the same benefit that Kougaiji gave him - a fresh start.

Power: Afterlife Traveler - In addition to a Noragami God's normal teleportation powers, Kshitigarbha's incarnations can open gateways to the Afterlife realms - Hell, Purgatory, Limbo, or Heaven/Near Shore - and select a general area on the map to appear, not just at random although this can be interfered with. They are also not treated as outsiders in Hell, Purgatory, Limbo, or Heaven/Near Shore; they can walk freely in these places and not get attacked like a trespasser would - unless their own actions provoke someone of course. If they guide an Afterlife dweller from Hell, Purgatory, or Limbo to Heaven/Near Shore - must be holding their hand - then that dweller is transitioned to a Near Shore dweller, or "forgiven."

Anything Else?: I'm willing to force the "forgiveness" part of his power to require that Dokugakuji take on some of the dweller's blight/sin in order to transition them. Alternately, if this is deemed too powerful, I can just take the "forgiveness" bit at the end out and focus on traveling.
